    Marica says:

    Slime for Clouds

"Slime for Clouds" is the first dream I had in advance of taking the picture. It was also the first dream I ever had that was just an image -- no story, no narrative of any kind, just an image that included two green clouds above a familiar seascape. The dream made no sense until one day, a few months later; I was shooting a picture of the Coast Guard Station reflected in a pond that had algae floating on top. The algae formed two perfect clouds that swam into my lens. I later recognized them from my dream but I took the picture when the red roof turned to velvet against my skin and the white shingles felt as soft as Santa’s beard. This image is included in Patricia Lynn Duffy's wonderful book Blue Cats and Chartreuse Kittens.

    From her lecture abstracts page:

When A Window Is Also A Mirror

A Dream: I am sitting at a semi-circular desk wrapped around my waist snug as a baby’s highchair. The desk is like any desk except for where it is: the middle of the ocean. I am dry as a landlocked scribe from the waist up, but from the waist down, my body is submerged. My chair is actually a bicycle, my feet touching pedals underwater. I discover a button on my computer that catapults me into live music without my having to get up from the chair, or bike, or out of the water. I am a female centaur, hooves replaced by aquatic wheels - half rider, half writer – which is why in waking life (I think later), when I mean to type “write” I see “ride” appear on my computer screen, as though my fingers think in homonyms and take dictation from voices I can’t hear.

This dream provides the perfect metaphor for how synesthesia feels, although in waking life, I have no magic button to initiate the experience. I look to Nature instead, specifically reflections on water where light, at certain times of day, sends me into multiple modalities. I experience sound, texture, and motion but never voluntarily, so I put myself in the vicinity of where I know it might occur. My images elicit the same synesthetic responses every time I see them. By sharing them, I hope to transform Nature’s mirror into a useful window for us all.

    Dali-Land

I love the archetypal material that Dali-Land contains: a primordial bird at top, a diving bird below, an infinity sign, a fish on the edge of the universe, a hand mirror and a blouse. Do you see others? What I find most amazing is that a close-up shot of water can contain symbols with meaning. I wonder how I saw this image on moving water, consciously or unconsciously. What internal sonar took me to this image? Is it synesthesia that explains why, in the absence of thought, I photograph that which is never hidden but usually unseen?ch is never hidden but usually unseen?

    Zebra Dream

I named this image for a dream I had about a flying zebra but when I look at it today, I see the face of a tiger. What I love about this game is that the focusing takes place not with the external eye but with the internal "I" (eye). What do you see? Turn it in all four directions and then ask again, what do I see? Your inner eye will find it.
