    Integral Health Care

    Greetings,

I am a new I-I member, as of 30 minutes ago or so....:-) Is anyone up for a discussion on Integral Health care? This has been a strong interest of mine, for a while. I have participated in the health care area in a variety of settings: complemetary medicine, hospital floor, ER, long-term care, policy and now preparing to head towards adminstration. I have tried all areas, one has flexibility as a registered nurse!

I have many pieces to a puzzle that I cannot seem to fit together, there are pieces missing that I have not even discoverd yet....

What would an Integral Health Care system look like? It is a huge and fragmented system..so where do we begin?

I am aware of the Integral Medicine Seminar in 2024. I hope to attend! My my shadow self is extremely impatient and it is difficult for me to wait that long!

    Look Forward to your thoughts!

    Hello Monica -

I would be delighted in talking with you on what "integral health" may look like.

What are you working on and what would you define as "integral Health"?

Currently - I have been in a defining discussion around the term "wellness" and have arrived at somewhat of a conclusion based on some of the work already available out there.  To get an idea of where I stand in off of this - I have been involved in community and public health (health edu) for the last ten years in various positions. 1st within a non-profit, then government.  Currently I am building a health education and wellness center.  Check it out!  www.firststepwellness.com Let me know what you think...

    Hi Todd,

Thanks for your reply. Your health and education center looks wonderful! How is it going ? is it sustainable?

Basically right now I am  working with the theory. I am still in the discovery phase of my quest....As a nurse I have worked with many different individuals with infinite worldviews and concept of self. Becasue of this I have found it helpful to adjust my interation based on the needs and perception of that individual. Teaching for the most part. Because of this I have been drawn to Spiral Dynamics as a means of 'assessment' and I thought that it would be interesting to explore how SD can be used to assess individuals, populations, health care services, policy, treatments, preventative care, etc. I  know that AQAL and SD are different models, but can they be merged together?and how? ah , my brain hurts.

I am in some minor influential positions in my state that provides services and supports for the elderly and disabled. There tho, we deal a lot with the state government and Medicaid payments, so ,well..need I say more? :-). Currently we are changing our focus on how services are considered and delivered, using the Person Centered Planning Framework., which is generally a holistic value based model. It is a start. It is good.

I probably should find  more time to read about these theories and also listen to my Kosmic  CD's.

    Thanks for reading Todd/

    Monica!!!

    How cool!!

" Because of this I have been drawn to Spiral Dynamics as a means of 'assessment' and I thought that it would be interesting to explore how SD can be used to assess individuals, populations, health care services, policy, treatments, preventative care, etc. I  know that AQAL and SD are different models, but can they be merged together?and how? ah , my brain hurts. I have done just that.  I started with SD since to me, it made the most sense.  I am always looking for a was to assess so that the plan I put in place will be most effective.  SD alone is a great tool and I look forward to discussing at length what I have done, what you have done, and where we might be able to go from there.

I actually had convinced the state of PA to allow me to introduce any of the health education specialists with the Health Bureau (of which I was part) to listen to a brief introduction of Integral Theory and hit on all the major points of AQAL. (which really wasn't that brief - took 2 hours)

I have also used one of those russion egg dolls, with multiple layers, to tell the story of SD in a four quadrant story.  Worked very well and only took an hour.  We were able to hit most aspects of AQAL quite well.  The educators and I sat totally energized and engaged for the whole time and then lunch...  it was a great morning.  So I appluad your efforts and look forward to hearing what you do next.

Ann Arbor MI?  I get up there once in a while.  Do you ever make it out to DC, Boulder, or Boston? It would be great to meet.

Thanks for your thoughts on my website.  That is my latest project totally using AQAL as the basis for what we will offer.  I am now applying SD in marketing as well (though marketing and health promotion are not that far off)

" I am in some minor influential positions in my state that provides services and supports for the elderly and disabled. There tho, we deal a lot with the state government and Medicaid payments, so ,well..need I say more? :-). "

It may start minor - but if you are passionate - it will have a global effect.  You know that right? You should get involved with the community conversation to play around more with this ideas.

"Currently we are changing our focus on how services are considered and delivered, using the Person Centered Planning Framework., which is generally a holistic value based model. It is a start. It is good. "

I would like to hear more on this.  We too here at the center may have good use of what you speak of.  We should definatley stay in contact.

Until later - may you be well.

    Hey Todd!
I apologize for my delayed reply. i have been on holiday!

I think that it is wonderful what you have been accomplishing in PA. Amazing. How did the others respond? Were they receptive? good to know that I am on the same wave lenght as others out there.

Yes, I am very passionate about this and I hope to be an influence to others in health care reform in the future. Right now I am searching for information, mentors, education..etc. anything to get a grasp of this information and figure out the best way to apply it to my own life as well.

I will be in the DC area in august, my significant other and I will be attending a wedding. I also have a friend in PA so you never know! Please contact me if you are in A2 anytime soon. We should talk and, def. stay in touch. I am extremely excited about this !

The person centered planning framework stemed from the disability movement. It primarily addresses the RUQ. It is a processs- oriented approach to help empower people with disabilites and the elderly. In MI it has been mainly utilized within the mental health population. The basic premise it to discover and balance supports and services with what is important "to" as person and what is important 'for' that individual .Basically physical health care needs are addressed in importnat 'for'
(medications, hydration, nutrition, etc) and important 'to' a person ( family, type of food, hobbies etc). Health care delivery tends to just address what is important 'for' a person and largely ignores the 'to' part. and this is a vital part of the healiing process! it helps those feel empowered who usually, as a result of their condition, tend to have decisons made for them. Here is a basic resource:

    http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/ped/tsal/pcp/

MI does not have a formal site yet. I look forward to connecting again in the near future.

    Re: Integral Health Care

    Hey -

With your background I could use your advice.  Please return to www.firststepwellness.com and glance over the site if you would.  We completely over hauled the site, cleaned it up.  Let me know what you think.  I am trying to push integral wellness one step further and market it to the community. No hurry...  no worries...

What is cool is for the next week I am going to be meeting a group of dancers and teachers up in the White mountains of New Hampshire to look at a project that has been using dance as a way to inspire people wherever they are in Spiral Dynamic terms.  (the coolest thing is that many of these participants don't even know about SD - but the few who do and started this project three years ago have found a way to communicate with  then effectivley!)  This project has at the very least helped spread the communal/spiritual/health and wellness messgae evenly across the USA and even into other countries.  Gives new meaning to act locally - think (or effect) globally (the globe)

How goes things on your end?

    Finally...

Is that blurred photographic impression supposed to be you?  Any way to see a clearer image?

    Re: Integral Health Care

    Todd ,
The website looks fabulous. I like how you address certain areas of disease management ( diabetes and CVD). Does your program allow room for meditative practices, yoga therapy perhaps? Of course I am biased, being a yoga practitioner and a one time teacher and all....but I think that meditation has numerous physical, emotional, psychological and spirtual benefits that we are not aware of, but of course you know this. I would love to see it be a major part of the health care paridigm. Do you take any insurance? Will insurance even pay for this.

Are you at all intereseted in joining and additional social network? I have started a pod on Integral Health Care at Zaadz and began exploring ideas with others. Of course I have not a clue what I am doing, but I have a vision, passion and experience. I think that it is a good place for me to strat. It would be wonderful to have your input/ideas/experience in the discussion!

Yes the blurred photo is me. I love it!Big Smile [:D]
But here is a clearer pic.

    Talk Soon.

    Re: Integral Health Care

    Monica hi,
I have used AQAL quite extensively, and to approach the issue of treatment of alcohol and drug dependency, which is a rather large subset of health care. We could discuss this online or via the phone if you like. I am currently at a Benedictine Monastery with no phone service for the next few days, but my email is johndupuy@gmail.com and we could set up a time to talk or continue emailing.

    Re: Integral Health Care

    Hey All -

It’s been a while since I have written, so sorry - got caught up in a project and it pretty much takes up the "extra" time.  Plus - there were some things I wanted to test out before I begun to write about them.

The idea of integral health care has been on the back of my mind for at least seven years now and keeps getting clearer and clearer.  I knew when the time came and I had something to say, I would then say it.  No use wasting anyone's time posting fuzzy obscurities of truth.

Here have been some of my thoughts on the topic.

Integral Health Care or Integral Medicine? Or do they both belong inside of something much larger.

I believe Integral Health or Wellness would be the over-all topic (of course it is a holon of something even larger – but for the purpose of defining a map, I had to block out a specific space in reality as top)

To do a quick AQAL overview of Integral Health or Wellness (can’t make up my mind on which it would be…  any suggestion here would be great)

    Health

UL -  Mental – emotional – relational – the whole physchograph. Those aspects which are going on internally.  Psychology and education I believe can interact heavily within however, only to a point.  There seems to be some crossover between UL and UR. Either way – I think the internal “being” or “health” resides here.  Spiral dynamics falls here.

UR – Here is where I think medicine fits. I view medicine as a tool/practice and truly not health in and of itself.  It helps people to return to functioning, to a certain level of health, but it is not health itself.  I think medicine pinpoints the individual as well and therefore falls in the upper right. Behavioral change/actions falls here (observable)

LL – cultural view of what health/wellness is, the conventional wisdoms.  In order to begin to press into this I have seen that marketing, promotion, and the involvement of the systems at play need to be set up in order to affect this quadrant.

LR – the system itself, in this case, health care (which is really a misnomer, since the system does not care for health, but bring people back to a certain level of functional health)  These are the systems and the artifacts, the drug companies, and the hospitals – though businesses, communities, and other organizations fall here.  The collective of course.

    What do you think?

This is what I have been playing with. Defining each and every topic that may come my way.  My most clearest is the AQAl overview of an obstacle which I will soon publish as a white paper via wellnesstalks.org.

Sorry if this is too much after months of being quite absent.  I have been following what I can of your (Monica) conversation on Zadz and I find it absolutely fantastic that such a discussion is taking place.  Any thoughts on this?

Also – are any of you going to go to the I-I meeting in November on I-medicine?/healthcare? I am trying to figure out how to raise the funds to go… though it looks like it would be just SO good to attend…  by then I think I will be able to make more sense out of my crazy notes and be able to contribute.

    Hope things are well.

    Todd

    Re: Integral Health Care

    Hi Monica and all,

I saw your post many months ago and didn't answer to it but I am interested by the subject working myself in this area.  I am not in the clinical care rather in planning and organization but working with clinical people.

Many countries work with Integral Health Care system but not with the Wilber's model and not with the different levels of conciousness.  You said Health Care system is huge and fragmented?  Oh yeah, and not just a few.  Like I'm working as manager of an organization,  I'm beginning to study "my" population:  owners of  housing for different people with a less or more lack of autonomy coming from different causes.

It should be interesting (more than that) to share our experiences.  I'll look for your comments with great interest.

    Martine

    Re: Integral Health Care

Monica, welcome to our community. I have been working on a model of treatment for addiction and chemical dependency using the AQAL since 2024. It's a very specific use of the AQAL map for a specific disease, but you might find it useful in looking at Integral health care in general. My email address is johndupuy@gmail.com.
If you email me your email address I will be glad to send you my latest paper and thoughts on this issue.
