-Info not available; project on hold

-- News flash: AQAL Journal will be published publicly, as an on-line journal now, paper later; available on Multiplex soon. 4 issues/year. All of 2024 will come out together, at least 700 pages. Ken wrote two intro articles.

The Integral community seems almost obsessed with Transformation – the most important thing is translation not transformation, says Ken. There’s a tension between translation and transformation; but they go hand in hand. Unhealthy translation distorts transformation.

We need to hold our ideas and constructs lightly, maintain flexibility, when using AQAL map to understand reality, self, other, so we don’t get into turf wars about what we each believe.

On Lines:

Multiple lines have been noticed by other theorists, e.g. Cook-Greuter, Kegan, Loevinger, etc. Piaget was deeply aware of differences between cognitive intelligence and moral/social awareness; said no-one can afford not to look at some of the world’s most intelligent people who have inflicted moral evil. Kohlberg and Gilligan both indicated awareness of multiples lines. Loevinger: several independent variable elements in ego development – cognitive, moral, emotional, spiritual, etc. But they didn’t differentiate and compare the lines.

How many independent strands are there? It’s not clear. Even the self-related strands are made up of several. Lines can even be blended in one person and separate in another. Which self-related strands determine someone’s altitude? There’s also no one test for a person’s general COG (center of gravity), although Kegan’s SOI (Subject-Object Interview) may give a general view of the self-related lines.

The Cognitive line, the ability to take perspectives, is higher than the interpersonal line (in what I’m aware of in general, what am I aware of vis a vis another person?). The self-related and interpersonal lines can be higher than the moral . You need a strong sense of self and clear sense of the other before you can extend realistic care & compassion to others.

The Psychograph, a 3-2-1 View:

The Psychograph is a theoretical construct and an assessment device. As a construct, it’s immediately powerful, graspable and helps you make an intuitive assessment; you formulate how you think about yourself or another. The lines are a bit more fluid than first realised (Kegan). As a test, there is no single test giving info about how your lines and levels all fall together. So David suggests a 3-2-1 approach.

For 3rd person, if you had unlimited funds and time, you could get a variety of psychological tests and assessments. You might first take Susann’s Sentence Completion Test (SCT), wait a while, and then take Kegan’s Subject-Object Interview. At JFK, one of Sean Hargens’ classes got funding and took several tests. Kegan’s SOI fine-tunes Susann’s SCT and tells where you’re going (e.g., exiting a level). It shows substage changes too: repudiations, transformation, reintegration. There are also tests of moral development available, and one based on Fowler’s stages of faith.

2nd person is when you ask someone who knows you to tell you about yourself, honestly. 1st is where you do your own intuitive psychograph evaluation of yourself, in separate lines or in toto.

Example from David’s own life (confidential):

David decided to learn about the Enneagram by first taking it. He found he couldn’t stop thinking in terms of his own levels of development, although it’s about personality type. He tried to be as truthful about himself in answering the test questions. His result (3rd person) came out different than how he saw himself (1st person). Then he entered a second person phase, discussing it with someone he trusts but who is bluntly honest with him. The friend’s view more closely matched him with the type he saw in himself. He felt benefited by taking 3 perspectives and working with them. This is IMP, Integral Methodological Pluralism. Acc. to David, the best psychometric is always going to have some kind of these 3 perspectives. This will be important when I-I develops a usable psychograph as assessment device, eventually.

Upside and downside of intuitive psychograph assessment of self and another (1st,2nd person):

1st person self-assessment:

Assessing ourselves, we use a felt-sense, a lens which itself is influenced by what we can’t see (the knife can’t cut itself). Kegan’s “Principle of origination” – we can’t see our own lens as we’re looking through it. We’re subjected to and subject others to it.

We may inflate our self-view, thinking we’re post-post-conventional, when unconsciously, we’ve contracted away from knowing something…shadow. Also, we have emotional part-selves, unconsciously split off from each other and the whole (our integrity) from a previous level, when we didn’t fully make a transformation to the next level.

Everyone has some part-selves. No one escapes childhood without some contractions and defenses. Seeing something as higher than it is, is the PTF, and we commit this all the time.

Resisting transformation: Transformation partly means giving up egotism, experienced as a death, especially by part-selves. Sub-selves want to survive and maintain their agency (fixation). They have their own defenses. They do not want to die and re-integrate. (Gestalt death layer). The self system can hijack higher level explanation to serve defense/fixation at a lower level.

It’s the nature of fixations and wanting to keep our agency – we might have to melt into the higher level translations which will not satisfy lower level fixations. It’s easier to see this theoretically than spot it when it happens. Also, defenses, like projection, don’t die easily.

The upside: Becoming aware of our own process helps free us from it (more below). As we develop further, we get better at letting go of parts of ego and can make transformations with more integrity (wholeness, less split-off parts). So at higher levels, we can be more objective in our self-assessments.

2nd person assessment:

The more developed you are, the better you’re able to assess another’s levels, but be careful to hold your views lightly. When evaluating another, your own system (self, defenses, even quadrants) dovetails with the other’s system. There’s almost always some distortion, in direct proportion with your own shadow and cognitive development (ability to complexly grasp different dimensions).

Can’t overemphasize being respectful of another’s level, not wanting to transform them. The desire indicates your distortion, contraction, projection, but realize we’re pretty much projecting a bit all the time (Buddhism). Another

Possible distortion is quadratic, not realizing that someone’s behavior may be a response to environmental influences (LL, LR situations), rather than their own dynamics.

Observing another takes a balance between honesty and humility. (How to talk to another about your observations, below.)

Therapists and a lot of researchers spend time with second person perspective. David’s writing a book about vision logic, green, teal, indigo – a huge part of the Integral culture. Growing within the “miracle of the we-space”, LL, helping each other. Need to be gentle and help each other with translations – the Prime Directive, supporting people to be the best at their level. Autopoietic we-space that is filled with honesty. Valuable to seek feedback from people who have experience with psychographs, lines and development.

Best: Combining 3-2-1 person perspectives:

Kegan’s SOI has elements of 3-2-1. Interviewer evaluates you in open-ended manner. Then several raters double check the ratings of the interview transcript for agreement, for more objectivity. In his books, Kegan writes in second person, inviting the reader to participate.

Transformation and resistance:

Second Person Assessment and help:

The Archaeologist and the Midwife:

The archaeologist digs into the psyche for assessment. The midwife helps translation and transformation.

The self holds on to the level it’s at. There are pros and cons to changing. The self fears the emptiness of form and content of the level above, where there are no translations yet. States and state-stages are involved: Emptiness is right above you at all times, incl. ultimate I-I. But you can also practice “sideways” toward emptiness. Developing higher brings more fullness into the emptiness. Incidentially, Causal = “very very subtle”; it’s not quite non-dual.

Great way to aid your transformation is to find someone who is half a stage above you (Kegan). Your higher cognition is matching their current translations. You have an opportunity to morphically resonate with them if you enter into a kind of second person phase with them. They are helping you translate from a higher perspective. You can begin suffering at a higher level (wry joke). These initial footprints, the way you enter your next level, when distorted, are very hard to overcome. But at higher levels, from experience, we start to get better at making sure that initial conditions are as optimal as they can be.

When helping another, make sure you don’t adversely affect their transformation. Make sure the overall health of the spiral continues. Translation is more important as an ethical mandate from a higher level.

The self creates the psychic space to create at a higher level. How translations are made when someone is in the presence of a mentor. An energetic presence Wilber V model gives us a therapeutic way of understanding this process.

The cognitive line matters but other lines can be more difficult to attain. If you’re born into a society which pulls you to Orange, you’ll more easily move into some form-op, abstract thought and thinking about thinking. High cognition can be used to pull up other lines too. Wilber helps us understand higher levels. What is someone actually doing in any situation. There’s no teleological development in Kegan’s model – where Ken’s model has an advantage – cannot take subjectivity of its own subjectivity, esp. at highest levels.

It’s a huge part of transformation, when we start seeing contradictions in our own behaviours. Most people in first world countries are exiting amber – leave a familiar identification – seeing contradictions for the first time – can be shocking. Feel stupid when we’re getting smarter, but we hate feeling stupid, contract and defend, in danger of falling backward, staying in previous level. Levels have increasing complexity but hopefully less selfishness. How contradiction of identifications become to be understood by the self is difficult. Fixations – each fixation hides from a higher translation, that is, transcendence. Sub-personalities continue to deflect personalities away from confrontation and change. Defensiveness is the opposite of integrity (wholeness). This is also true in the other quadrants—action and interaction and influence.

High cognition—cognition from the next higher level when you begin to use it, can be used by any part-self, to reflect on its own lower motivations, and check on PTFs, which helps it resolve lower level fixations (stuckness). You can understand a higher level even before you can use it. Transformation begins with awareness of how we’ve been, but that’s only the beginning. We still have lots of translation to do.

Kegan on “hearing irritably”: Hearing irritably—each new level allows you to hear irritably what before you could not hear at all (translation) and hear without irritation what you before heard irritably.

Although 3-2-1 is best, the second person approach can be extremely helpful. Hold your views lightly when offering them; you may be wrong or could beget contractions in the other.

Transformation is not the most important thing for the planet – healthy re-translations – e.g. translate amber fully not transform into orange. The midwife to the process (not in a transformational capacity) aids translation.

Therapist as midwife opens up previous levels and aids re-scripting the play. Object relations (psychodynamic) therapy is the best for catching a person up to the highest functioning at their level. Awareness develops.

What is pathology?

Is it an arrested self system? A sub-personality taking over/ hijacking cognition? Regression to a previous stage?

Someone is arrested below the dominant social holon – different in different contexts. Someone in a psychotic ward could be going through a higher translation but is looked at from a lower perspective. Using AQAL can differentiate all three versions – each has value in terms of one perspective and possibly one perspective on how someone is suffering. Maybe arrested on the dominant mode of social discourse. Personality which is also hijacking cognition.

Fixations hide from transcendence, reflecting awareness away from themselves.

Q & A

It’s almost impossible to look at our own psychograph – can we at least begin to hold lines intuitively? Can we generally say, I’m like an average adult (conventional), or I seem to be above or below in some way?

A. As you have stages you have transcended – levels of complexity you’ve already gone through – fullness and expand – fullness and expand again, etc. but rest of levels of identity-less – distal me – have memories – can fully go down and operate from that level. E.g. learn martial arts to protect from red – would need to go down to that level to protect myself. Can make a comparison – recognise elements as objective behaviours. Have to be brutally honest but hard to do because of unconscious fixations. Yes and No is answer – second person occasions – find one who is a higher level from you who will be respectful but honest with you. Kegan the principle of orgigination cannot be reflected upon. No way to assess levels from zone 1 – cannot translate that into a psychograph.

Q. When someone gives you feedback and you “hear it irritably” (Kegan), there must be also, not hearing at all. Is hearing irritably like hearing someone evoking your golden shadow (repressed emergent unconscious…threat zones?)

A. Yes, wanting to maintain integrity in the level but opening up to the next level up.

Q. What psychometrics would you recommend?

A. Susan Cook-Greuter – not as long as subject/object workshop. Follow up with Subject/Object workshop. SCG altitude but S/O will be able to get sub-phase.

Q. Nisargadatta Maharaj said (P. 83, Consciousness and the Absolute) "Your own concepts will only serve as an instrument of bondage". Ultimately, does the

Integral model imprison or set free?" Can do either one – Yes and no – reifying a concept you will imprison – how do I best use the model? Verbiage that someone uses is going to tell you how they’re going to use the model. How is someone going to use/misuse anything?

  1. What do you think is the highest level of development?

  1. From what he can understand is that SCG is starting to get responses that are emerging at a higher altitude. Walking a very fine line – goes back to my quote – the writer of the exam must be at least at that level – the best he can say can’t be reduced to a lower level – pretty good assumption that is something new. She showed some quote indicative of an emerging level - roughly between Teal and Indigo but hold it lightly.

  1. Do you have a model of integral psychograph to use on its own? A tool to use to do our own psychograph?

A. At this time – the best we can do accessing is accessing 2nd person occasions and being brutally honest with yourself and not being brutally honest with others and coming together with some quasi idea of my altitude – where do I contract and expand? Where these self-related streams locate themselves in context? But what you’re asking for is an empirical test to use to differentiate the lines and will indicate where your actual level is and it does not exist. Whenever you read a Ken Wilber book you’re starting to differentiate levels. Also doing it on any second person occasion in increasing awareness.

Q. Difference between translation and transformation?

A. Favouring translation over transforming. Whenever we see someone suffering we want to help them out of their suffering – to help people evolve – the first inclination. First tier – orientation in and of itself can’t transform – re-translate at their current altitude. E.g. fundamentalist – the way that they construct reality is based around fundamentals e.g. favouring old to new testament – orient to two different modes – one is looking at amber – very rule role orientation and the other is an expansion and freedom – so both individuals are protecting themselves. Bert Parlee – paradox and paradoxical therapy – start to help someone free their intense identity through paradox as a way of inoculating them against that altitude. Drop that initial defensiveness and speak to identification in terms they understand and trust bond formed and ask do you think this is good because they trust your presence. Fostering their own mood and shift in considering their contradictions.

  1. If I was to look at getting second person dialogue with a professional is there any particular therapy at a Teal level?

  1. I don’t think at this time that there is an entire school that has the tools to do this. Talk to your integral community about what tools they’re using. At I-I we’re saddened that we haven’t developed all that we need. Networking of an integral psychotherapist – someone maybe knows of this. In general I think that someone who is oriented to Object Relations is helpful at any level. What we take as subject or object is part and parcel of our objective altitudes. E.g. can have a narrative but can be shown by an object relations’ therapist were clearly rooted in the family dynamic and he was just a puddle on the floor – realisation really helped him with his development. He doesn’t believe his therapist is Teal but he believes it is an amber/exit approach – want to help people to get out of the attachment and cathect emotionally. But ironic of course. This therapist helped him anyway because it was object relations.

  1. How do affective lines of development relate?

  1. One of the most difficult lines to construct – how you orient to your affect is how you relate to your altitude because that is the seat of your personality at any time. All of the mechanisms of defences at any one time – differentiating out of that process – unclear who has done that. No good evidence that when you’re assessing someone’s affect you’re not assessing self-related streams in other lines. Don’t think it can be done – takes a conservative view about what can be done – leans towards Kegan – e – motion is actually the key of motion at any level. When he experiences his emotions he doesn’t look at them as they were in the past – retro-jecting. What does that say about emotions? Are they entirely related to world view, ego or your entire identity? Unclear what is going on – our clarity of emotions rests entirely on our altitude. Cognition leads the pack but your emotions are where all the action is.

  1. Can you include tests that measure affect viz a viz SCK and Kegan’s work.

A. What test is using more cognition than affect – how are you able to measure emotions separated from affect? We are still at the very early stages and those considerations are in the future. Hold own concepts very lightly – it would be fantastic to have a quality measure of emotions.

Q. When you talk about measuring affect – are you talking about that to which you’re responding or measuring the affect itself.

A. There’s several ways we can approach it – when designing it have to design it to take that into account. David Chalmers’ work Qualia – relates to the felt experience versus the second of the types of events to which the event is responsed. Psychodynamic theorists orient to these different contexts. A test one of David’s professor did on cocaine addiction: measured neurological examples of addiction – ground-breaking to the scientific community – lighting up as if cocaine is in the brain when shown sight cues. He was doing a multi-quadrant empirical study. This can have a huge effect on his subject. This would be a good way to study affect – if you look at Qualia – how are you going to devise a quadrant level of that? It’s a kind of Behaviourism. Zone 1 – measuring the qualia – can’t measure the quality of it. The best you can do is develop a meta-test – a test that looks at the test. Then you might be able to measure the qualia and sociological, etc. survey. Can map it but can’t study it like a line that does have independent stages.

Additional notes that Joanne was too tired to organize:

The miracle of the We.

Autopoetic we-space that is filled with honesty. It is valuable to seek feedback from people who have experience with psychographs & lines and developments.

The self has defenses that don’t want to die. We will engage in the pre-trans fallacy. We will operate in a hall of mirrors & we think that we are looking at the sky when in fact we’re looking at the ground. The defenses want to keep their agency – they don’t seek communion because they don’t want to dissolve or surrender.

Stan Grof - Awareness starts with the death of all of these defenses. But this is only the beginning of the process, not the end! It only suggests that these negative aspects may have moved from the unconscious to the sub-conscious.

If you are born into a 1st world country, you are almost guaranteed early formal op cognition. Platform for systems thinking is the ability to think about thinking itself.

The integrity of any altitude is kept up by a certain defensiveness…

Ken’s model has telos. Contradictions. As soon as you can see yourself for the first time & notice contradictions, that is the moment that transformation begins.

Amber-exit. Highlight: competing commitments

This person might be disgusted that they are not the same person in all contexts.

They are seeing contradictions for the first time.

Children (and adults) will normally try to bend reality so as to maintain their emotional investments.

This helps the emerging Orange self gain a foothold.

What we see here is an enduring self concept.

Greater complexity creates an emotional charge – b/c we are pushing away from our selves.

Sub-personalities sometimes serve to push awareness away.

When we begin to enter a new sub-phase we start to feel disgusted with ourselves.

Inter- individuation

Green

Teal

Indigo

Early, Mid & Late sub-phases

5th order consciousness

This is the integral wave.

Hearing irritably

Draw circles with inner & upper arcs…

Top part of the circle – the things that we can hear irritably. Allows us to hear what we could not hear at all. There is an irritation at that top level of your altitude. When someone is talking at that level, we can start to feel contracted.

(IS THIS SIMILAR TO THE THREAT ZONE BEFORE EXPERIENCING YOUR GOLDEN SHADOW?)

Inner upper arc …& lower arcs.

How do I maintain integrity?

You may have to be conscious

The need to make sense out of you

On the other hand, maybe the irritableness is coming from the bottom.

The high cognition does not feel any translation. We are not invested in keeping

Resonance: parenthesis on left & right.

As we go through our transformations, you experience a sense of a-ha. Entering a new emptiness.

Pathologies as described by Kegan:

If a self-system that is completely arrested, then we have to bring in the lower quadrants. This is arrested below the dominant mode of social discourse.

There are three different types of pathologies.

Using AQAL we can begin to differentiate these three different pathologies. Each one has value. Helps us discern levels of suffering for that person.

Another type of pathology is temporary regression.

People seek therapy for Zone 1 pathologies.

Transformation here is not the most important thing. In these cases, healthy translation is what is called for.

Archeologist: Integral Assessment

Not just looking at someone’s history. Of course we will see their points of suffering.

But we also need to conduct a 2nd person perspective or Zone 2 approach of their various lines & levels of development.

Hyper-transference – analyzing the tetra-evolution of you and the client.

Midwifing

Holding the client’s hand. Re-scripting.

Helping with translation.

Re-script the object relations.

Help bring awareness, as the archeologist.

Helps free up energy for the self-system.

Gives client the chance to use cognition in more positive ways.

Facilitating overall transformation as well.

Lateral parenthesis (in the circle)

The Wilber-Combs matrix.

At every stage, the self has the capacity to grow.

Will see more of this in Transformations of Consciousness.

Pathologies in the higher stages of development will most likely be more differentiated.

We are using higher cognition to maintain our current altitude. But this spaciousness exists right above us. And there is a spaciousness on either side of us. The very-subtle realm.

If you meet someone who’s circle is above yours, this person is most capable of helping you transform. It’s always the person who is

Your cognition is matching their translations.

you have the opportunity to pull your awareness.

They are helping you translate from a higher awareness.

There is tremendous resonance there.

You can begin the process of translating at a higher level.

Evolution: We get better and better at creating the right conditions for our own transformation.

We make sure that the health of the spiral is our goal, not just the continued transcendence.

It is an ethical mandate that we be consciousness of this.

The Distal Self.

Levels of complexity that we’ve already gone through.

The Distal Self is like a jellyfish that squirts through some of these stages.

Question of how I-I might develop a 3-2-1 psychograph instrument?

There’ll be a tiered process. The first tier aims to create a way to start the process of accessing the lines of development in yourself. Then, have someone who is training in the subject/object relationship rate you. These people will be interns & they will visit salons & help people find their level of development.

Question: What about tests to measure emotional intelligence? Does David think that this follows all of the other lines of development?

If you are redefining a concept – you are being Amber. (??)

How will people use the model will determine whether it liberates or imprisons us.

Q: What is the highest level of development?

This is the frothy edge of evolution. We can’t reduce it to X, Y or Z.

However, Dave would say that it is somewhere between Teal & Indigo.

Q. Do you have a tool that we could use on ourselves? (from Gary in Seattle)

David: The best we can do is access 2nd person occasions where we can be brutally honest with ourselves & examine the moments where we contract & expand. What makes me jazzed up? Start to build a web of occasions where we feel contracted & start to look at patterns.

Q: I’m seeking to increase our awareness around the lines of development.

David: This happens when we read a Ken Wilber book b/c our self-system starts to identify with

Q: How to dialogue with fundamentalists?

Is interested in learning how to favor good translation over transformation. First and foremost, we want to alleviate someone’s suffering. The problem with 1st tier is the thinking that we are going to help someone evolve out of their own ignorance. We can help people re-translate at their current altitude – by helping them loosen some of their fixations. Once we do that, energy is freed up. But we can’t force the process. The best thing we can do is help people be themselves. Bert Perlee – Paradoxical therapy. Inoculating someone against their own defensiveness. Don’t highlight vectors. Allow trust to develop. The person might start to question their own identifications once they feel safe in your presence. It can be a sideways identification. We need to move away from the situations that encourage people to continually defend their views, opinions.

Object Relations Therapy-

Could be a good option for someone who is looking for an Integral Psychotherapist.

Most therapies/therapists are geared towards Amber-exit.

But as David says, this doesn’t matter. Because it can be

** The Affect line of development is very hard to construct.. Your altitude is

Your sub-personalities have emotions all of their own!!

It’s important to think about this holagraphically.

Differentiating affect out of that is highly difficult.

When you are assessing someone’s affect, you might be assessing

Hard to differentiate.

David takes a conservative view of what has been empirically shown.

Quasi-independence in one direction doesn’t mean quasi-independence in another direction (?)

Keagan: Emotion = Evolutionary motion. These shift as we move through the various

Emotion as an independent line? It is related to Ego & Worldview.

David would be happy to be disproved in this matter.

The clarity of our emotions rests in our altitude.

Cognition leads the pack.

How to objectively measure affect?

Or, how to use cognition to access emotions?

David holds his own concepts lightly.

Look at David Chalmers’ work as an example.

qualia” The actual essence of the felt experience itself.

David Zeitler recommends looking at emotion through all four quadrants.

But how to create an exam for that?

It’s a kind of behaviorism.

Zone 1 – measuring the qualia.

Zone 1 does not contain levels of development.

The best you can do is develop a meta-test. That is, a test that looks at tests.

Then you can come up with a survey of emotions that arise.

A phenomenological survey of sorts.

Structures of consciousness.

This is an opinion that David holds lightly.

David thirsts for authentic community.

And so do we.

Unhealthy translation distorts transformation.

High cognition helps realization of contradictions within self system, begins the process of identifying defenses, fixations, element of disgust when you first see your contradictions, as you begin to move out of your current level of development

The self creates the psychic space necessary for new translations, an energetic process

Each fixation hides from each transcendence.

Highest level of cognition hears anything without irritation because it is not trying to defend any fixations.

Healthy retranslation is most important thing for the planet.

The principal of organization cannot be reflecting upon. You cannot assess your own levels for a psychograph—it will have built in corruption due to self deception.
